Q&A: Sort of a math education question?

I was in my algebra class and someone asked the teacher the question: “So where am I going to ever use these logarithms?”

Has anyone else been kind of curious to what a good answer to this would be? I have and now I have a different response than the usual, “Most of you won’t ever use this, but it is used in chemistry, vulcanology, and finance…” which is ultimately compounding the real problem here…

Who out there believes like I do, that the goal of education is to grow in such a manner, that we are able to solve problems, which have up until that moment lacked a viable solution?

I naturally piped up and said one word that gained silence “Thought!”… and quickly slinked back into my chair as I really didn’t intend to say it to everyone but just to myself… oooops!

I have to correct you and challenge that the spelling for

vulcanology is correct,

and I checked the Oxford English Dictionary (yes I have the set) so I’ll say that your lexicon is inferior.

Not trying to be condescending but you are a military nurse, and not a scientist or mathmetician, so your testimony is ignoble, oh and of course you wouldn’t either know that two spellings for the same word could exist or that the nature of my question pertained to the lack of appreaciation of thought… The spelling you suggested is also correct but I like mine better…
I like Spock! Really on a serious note the spellings are ambivalent, check them.

I will answer it as a person who actually does use it for work.

Logarithm can be used in various fields as you have already mentioned it, and used rigorously. most scientific fields, engineering, computer fields, finance, accounting, all use logarithm.

It’s true the goal of educatoin is such and such… but if you are going to do something like writing, acting, music, arts, etc. I guess math is not as important. But it always helps getting into good colleges or getting a good job if you have good grades in every subject!

The question: “Suppose you take out an auto loan for $ 8800 over a period of 3 years at an APR of 5%. To the nearest $ 100, determine the total amount of your payments over the term of the loan.”

I got the answer: $ 3,356.24
I think I may have gotten this one wrong. If so, could you show me how to get the correct answer?

Compound interest is found using a simple formula:

number * interest^increments;

In this case:

$ 3,200 * 1.015^12
$ 3,200 * 1.015^12 = $ 3,825.98;

the answer is $ 3811.2512 You may want to round it to $ 3811.25
you want to find 6% wich is .06 plus what you have per year or + 100% which is +1 so find take your money each year and multiply it by 1.06
3200*1.06=3392
3392*1.06=3595.52
3595.52*1.06=3811.2512

I can’t vote or I would have voted for ingnoramus. I overlooked the interest compounded quarterly part. ingnoramus has the right answer.
